Ministry reiterates stance against surrogacy

The Ministry of Health reemphasized its stance against illegal reproductive assistance measures, such as surrogacy, on Tuesday when responding to a report that said the ministry is considering legalizing surrogacy.

An official told Xinhua News Agency that the ministry has consulted experts in the fields of medicine, law and ethics on the issue of surrogacy, and that most of the experts involved in the discussion believe that surrogacy will lead to many serious legal and ethical problems, disrupt the social order and harm surrogate mothers and their children both physically and mentally.

The ministry launched a one-year program to overhaul the booming business of surrogacy and illegal trading of sperm and ovum in February, encouraging people to tip off the ministry about such illegal conducts.
