At 91, Tie Yang is holding his third solo exhibition at the National Art Museum of China to share his latest developments in painting.
Gazing into the Distance, running until Sept 23, features oil paintings, watercolors, gouaches, illustrations, sculptures, and stage designs, showcasing his versatility across mediums — an artistic complement to his alternative world as a seasoned writer.
A native of Hebei province in northern China, he pays tribute to his deep emotional bond with the soil and its people with unbounded strokes. His works focus on people's daily life with the kang (bed-stove), a unique fixture in northern rural households where people carry out domestic activities, with the cornfield as the backdrop.
His recent landscapes show a carefree spirit, with a rich, vibrant palette that celebrates the power of life.
Tie Yang donated 36 of his artworks to the National Art Museum at the exhibition's opening on Tuesday.
