From Nov 20 to 23, the 2025 Annual Peking Opera Classics Showcase, funded by the National Arts Fund and hosted by the China National Peking Opera Company, will be staged at the Mei Lanfang Theatre in Beijing.

The event will bring together some of China's leading Peking Opera troupes, including the China National Peking Opera Company, Jingju Theater Company of Beijing, and Tianjin Jingju Theatre Company. It will feature performances by distinguished veterans and rising talents, showcasing four beloved classics, such as Romance of the Western Chamber, The Cosmos Sword and The Legend of the White Snake.

The Cosmos Sword, created and premiered by the famed Peking Opera master Mei Langfang (1894-1961), is considered one of the most famous and classic works of Mei. Hu Wenge, a performer trained in Mei's artistic style, played the role of Lady Zhao, who feigns "madness" to escape becoming a royal concubine. The piece involves complex vocal techniques and brilliant acting, offering both dramatic challenge and artistic beauty.

The Legend of the White Snake will be performed by Wang Yan, head of the experimental troupe of the Tianjin Jingju Theatre Company, and Guo Xiao, an actress from the China National Peking Opera Company. This classic tells the poignant love story of the mortal Xu Xian and the immortal White Snake, Bai Suzhen. Known for its beautiful melodies and intricate staging, the piece will showcase delicate expressions of love and transformation, as well as spectacular martial arts scenes.

Launched in 2023, the annual showcase aims to preserve and promote the legacy of Peking Opera.

"This event presents a diverse range of performances, each showcasing the unique charm of Peking Opera and bringing together some of the most celebrated artists and distinctive styles," said Wang Yong, director of the China National Peking Opera Company. "It offers an exciting opportunity for both new and longtime fans of Peking Opera to experience the artistry of this national treasure."
