Celebrity portraits are an iconic theme in the oeuvre of pop artist Andy Warhol, the most impressive among those portraits being the ones depicting Marilyn Monroe.

A Monroe portrait made in 1964 will go under the hammer in a Christie's sale in New York in May.

Shot Saga Blue Marilyn captures the Hollywood star's signature smile by which Warhol sought to eternalize her feminine grace and beauty. The work is from the Foundation of Thomas and Doris Ammann, named after two noted art dealers.

The proceeds from the sale will be for a charitable purpose, allowing the foundation to provide healthcare and educational programs for children.
