China: Find political solution to Syria crisis

By Wang Linyan In New York | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2016-12-14 10:52

China called for a political solution to the crisis in the war-torn country of Syria at an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday.

Given the situation in Syria is complicated and sensitive, the international community should unswervingly stick to seeking a political settlement, refocus on dialogue and consultation, and find a fundamental way to end the war as soon as possible, said Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the 15-member body to "do all we can to stop the carnage" and ensure that all the parties in the conflict seek an inclusive political resolution.

Ban said that in the last 48 hours, the world has witnessed an almost complete collapse of armed opposition front lines, leaving them with only 5 percent of their original territory in the city.

Syrian opposition forces prepared to withdraw from Aleppo on Wednesday after a ceasefire agreement was reached after talks between Russia and Turkey, according to Reuters.

Wu said multiple factors led to the situation in Syria today. The international community needs to think about the deeper reason and seek a comprehensive, fair and proper settlement, he said.

"Efforts of the international community should help the four-track work of the resumption of the ceasefire, political negotiation, anti-terrorism cooperation and humanitarian aid," Wu said.

He said China is ready to work with the international community to find a political solution as soon as possible.
