Belt & Road

By Edward AY Lee | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2017-06-02 20:04

While currently living in China on and off (length of Chinese visa dependent) since my early self managed retirement from the workforce overseas in 1998 at 50, I have been observing the varied modes of rapid changes in China which are rather dramatic, measureable and dynamic in magnitudes of big leaps and bounces, so rapidly dynamic that even US billionaire, Mr Bill Gates, was sighing with unbelievable surprises for each time he arrived in China.

Who said China’s socialist-communism model is bad, unfair or out dated? Far from its truth; let’s study and assimilate facts and fictions.

The introduction of the AIIB initiatives by China coupled with the establishment of BRICS banking system is playing a major role to counter anti-globalization and/or trade-protectionism effects in order that nations worldwide (emerging and developing nations in particular) are not marginalized by the “great power of gun and wealth” plays. The sweet and arduous works of China have begun and are showing to benefit all nations which are willing and keen to participate in its works and efforts, in particular to enrich human kind (humanity accord at its best).

Below: Key expressions of Mr. Jin Liqun, the AIIB's president

Its 57 founding members include not only the BRICS countries (China, Russia, India, Brazil and South Africa) and four Group of Seven countries (Britain, France, Germany and Italy), but also Egypt, Australia and New Zealand. So far, the U.S. and Japan have not joined. The AIIB expects to lend $10 to $15 billion per year to members for at least the next five years said by Mr. Jin Liqun, the AIIB's president on August 26, 2016.

BELT and ROAD ( in short form B&R which is derived from the expression "Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, was put forward by China in 2013" ) initiative of China , thanks to President Xi and team, is a must-do / must-participate opportunity of this New Century which will last as long as the Earth (our planet) remains safe and well to dwell in. Why? Because it is engaging every nation to cooperate, develop, co-finance and manage projects that can be really gigantic to the tune of USD multiple Trillions but beneficially cost effective through which these benefit all nations involved in it whilst peripheral boundaries (whether or not they are participants) are likely to reap its progresses.

What is a conceptually wiser model to be adopted or adapted jointly by member nations? Any amicable working model should consist of components to:

i) conquer the fears of have-nots,

ii) alleviate rural poverties,

iii) improve livelihoods of people,

iv) prove that practical and true humanity efforts help to enhance humanity goodies ( not solely political motivated talks and talks ),

v) march on with advanced technologies so as to add beauties and stabilities to infrastructures all the way as well as to remove and replace olds with newly designed and built kinds that are environmentally cleaner, cheaper to finance and safer to manage,

vi) and the most important and critical part of the B&R initiative (based upon my personal belief) shall be its capability to solicit, facilitate and engage all nationalities and nations to firmly bridge the much widened gaps of cultural respects, core interests, national beliefs, fictional misdeeds and mistrusts (“that is, share the beneficial outcomes among all rather than being confrontational at wars and/or conflicts while neither facing up to recognize historical horrendous barbaric ills against human kinds of other nationals nor act with sincere remorse which is a sort of vicious cyclic mental tortures on their parts and pasts like cyclones / typhoons repeatedly returning to haunt and damage“).
