New assessment criteria needed

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-07-03 17:24

The authorities should set up new quantifiable and feasible evaluation system, said an article in Beijing Youth Daily (excerpts below).

President Xi Jinping said that we should change the GDP-oriented political performance evaluation system for a system that recognizes contributions to improving public welfare.

It is high time we changed the present system for the sake of society.

Many problems have been exposed after rapid economic growth.

Local authorities and officials have always pursued GDP growth at the cost of public interest.

In 2010, China's per capita GDP energy consumption was 2.2 times of the world average.

This indicates that the quality and effect of China's economic development is remarkably lower than the world average.
