Advice for discipline officials

(China Daily) Updated: 2012-09-21 08:02

It is important that discipline inspection officials arm themselves with more knowledge on luxury goods and pass on the information to the public, says an article in China Youth Daily. Excerpts:

Luxury goods can expose corruption, because their astronomical prices make it unaffordable for government officials with legal means of income. Better knowledge about luxury goods will help discipline inspection supervisors trace corrupt officials.

As a discipline inspection official said recently, it's surprising to see that many discipline inspection supervision cadres are ignorant about even a simple fact that glass frames can cost as much as a million yuan.

Luxury products are highly expensive and civil servants, whose salaries are about 5,000 yuan ($790.6) a month, cannot afford them. So officials who possess luxury products should give convincing explanations on how they got them.

Many corrupt officials have been exposed and have lost their jobs because of investigations started against them for possessing luxury goods.

But there are still many others who still flaunt their luxury possessions in public. To some extent, luxury products provide a vital clue to start investigations against suspected corrupt officials. And a better-informed and more active public will help discipline inspection officials do a better job.
