A good guide for female students

(China Daily) Updated: 2012-09-19 08:09

Central South University has given this year's freshmen a manual for life security in its orientation program, which includes a special guide for female students on how to protect themselves from sexual assaults, which many students have been subjected to in the past. Let us hope the preventive measures the university has suggested yield positive results, says an article on xinhuanet.com. Excerpts:

Criminal activities, especially sexual assaults on female students, in universities are not rare. Female students become targets of the cyber world while hunting for jobs. University students live in a relatively innocent environment and are unaware of the pitfalls of the outside world. Female students, in particular, tend to idealize society and lack the knowledge or skill to protect themselves from harm.

The Central South University's manual, tailored for female students, offers a new perspective on higher education. Even some students who excel in studies and professional skills are found lacking in morality and cannot adapt to society's norms.

Some universities do lay emphasis on moral education to educate students about social values, but humanities' curriculums, in most cases, fail to reflect the extent of today's social development.

The Central South University's manual, aimed especially at female students, shows that the fear of sexual assault cannot be overlooked. It is aimed at protecting female students from harm and making campuses safe again. While teaching students to respect the law and becoming ideal citizens, higher education should also help female students be mentally and emotionally (and, if possible physically) strong. It is also important that public security bureaus crack down on criminal activities.

More importantly, female students must form the correct view of life, values and the world. They should also discard money worship, resist material temptations and become self-reliant.
