The nation will press forward with the reform and opening-up drive and socialist system, which in the past 30 years transformed its economy into the world's fourth-largest, President Hu Jintao said yesterday.

Not long ago, an American friend told me an interesting story about China. He said an American could write a book after returning from a weeklong trip to the East Asian nation but could only write a brief article after a three-month stay.

We are in the midst of the worst financial crisis since the 1930s. The salient feature of the crisis is that it was not caused by some external shock like the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries raising the price of oil. It was generated by the financial system itself.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) claimed yesterday that it has arrested an agent hired by the Republic of Korea (ROK), who it strongly suggested was tasked with assassinating the country's top leader, Kim Jong-il.
