Power and the fury
Two members of a TV news channel report live from near the floodwall along the Industrial Canal in New Orleans on Monday when Hurricane Gustav slammed the Louisiana coastline. Comment
In the 29th Olympics in Beijing, China outnumbered the United States by snatching more than 10 percent of the total gold medals. That could serve as a persuasive testimony that the country has pushed itself to the list of the world's top sports powers. Compared with its marvelous sports performance, China, however, has achieved far less recognition in science. It has never won a Nobel Prize, a top prize gauging one's contribution to the world in a certain realm, still far behind Britain, Germany and Japan, not to mention the US.
Opinion
Lately a stream of news reports has been floating around saying the United States and Iraq will soon sign an agreement on US military pullout and long-term political, economic and security relations between the two countries.
Business
Hurricane Gustav may trigger insurance claims as high as $10 billion after lashing Louisiana, according to firms that specialize in catastrophe estimates, making it potentially the fourth-highest total for a US storm.
Sports
There was a reason why some Chinese athletes were obsessed with Hollywood blockbuster Kungfu Panda in the run-up to the Olympic Games. First, it was good fun. Second, they were thinking about some of the rare wushu moves in the film.
