Rain in Nyingchi prefecture, over the past two weeks, caused a mud flow to block a river close to the highway linking Tibet with neighboring Sichuan province on Saturday. The rising water eroded the roadbed, resulting in the collapse of the highway. More than 10,000 cu m of earth had caved in as of yesterday. More than 120 soldiers are working to create a bypass. It is expected to be completed in three days, depending on the weather, Sun Hongjun, a police officer, said. (China Daily 09/03/2008 page4) |
