Largest full moon lights up Sunday sky

By Wang Zhenghua | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2013-06-24 19:16

The largest full moon this year, called a supermoon, lit up the night sky on Sunday.

According to astronomers, the moon arrived at perigee – the point in its orbit bringing it closest to the earth at a distance of 357,000 kilometers, on Sunday night. As a result, the full moon looked about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than it does at the farthest point in its orbit.

The moon will not be so close again until August 2014.
