Senior official underscores moral improvement

BEIJING - A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official on Friday stressed the importance of role models for improving society's moral standards.

Liu Yunshan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with representatives who lectured on the good deeds of a group of Good Samaritans in Beijing.

These role models displayed nobility through their good deeds and sent positive messages to all people, Liu said.

The role models included Wu Juping. When she saw a two-year-old girl dangling from the window of a high-rise in the neighborhood, she raced to catch her, preventing the girl from hitting the ground at full force. Wu suffered a fracture of her left arm in her heroic effort.

Another role model was Wu Bin, a bus driver who managed to stop his bus safely and evacuate 24 passengers on board after a metal fragment pierced the bus windshield and hit him in the chest. He later died from his injuries.

The revival of the Chinese nation, one of China's current major goals, includes building a society with high moral standards, Liu said.

Persistent efforts should be made to promote altruism and kindness so there will be more and more Good Samaritans, he said.
