Shanghai lists 15 unpopular majors
Shanghai education authorities have listed 15 college majors, which have seen low enrollment rates and low employment rates in the city for years.
The majors include Japanese, information management and information systems, business administration, arts design, marketing, logistics management, administrative management, public management, electronic and information engineering, environmental engineering, information and computer science, advertising, e-commerce, social work and transportation, according to the statement released by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission on Monday.
Officials said the majors have long seen decreasing enrollments and low employment rates. The list will serve as a reference for students who will apply for majors this year.
Some of the listed majors had an excessive number of students in previous years, which lead to low employment rates, while some listed majors have long been unpopular among students, despite high market demand, such as social work majors, according to local universities.
