Seven people out of 21 who contracted food poisoning after eating mudskippers were still in hospital on Monday night in Leizhou city, Guangdong province.

But Liang Guoliang, an official from the publicity department of the Leizhou city government, said no lives are in danger.

By Monday afternoon, 14 people had been discharged after receiving treatment, Liang said.

Twenty-one villagers from Leizhou’s Yingli township were diagnosed with food poisoning on Thursday and Friday. All of them reported symptoms including headache, vomiting and numbness in hands and feet after eating mudskippers, fish that can use their pectoral fins to walk on land.

Liang said mudskipper samples have been sent to Guangzhou for further examination.
