Seafood lovers are well catered for at Xanadu, a teppanyaki restaurant in the Chaoyang district of Beijing.

The owner is a successful businessman who specializes in seafood so all such dishes are not only very fresh, but are reasonably priced.

The restaurant is named after the ruins of the summer capital of Kublai Khan, founder of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) in Inner Mongolia.

A 288 yuan ($46.55) per head set menu offers more than 10 different dishes. Diners start with a bowl of salad, sashimi and roast prawns.

Then a teppanyaki chef will prepare fresh scallops, scampi, beef tongue, T-bone, cod, steak, vegetables and egg-fried rice on the spot.

Watching one’s meal sizzling as it cooks increases the diner’s appetite. The set menu also includes sake and a pot of matsutake, or pine mushroom, soup. Moreover, the restaurant serves a limitless amount of some dishes, such as prawns.

The restaurant has recently been renovated and only offers private rooms. However, there is a sushi and sashimi bar where diners can watch their food being made.

A giant fish tank containing jellyfish greets guests at the door. The 288-yuan set meal finishes with a sesame flavored ice cream.

There are also set menus priced at 388 yuan and 588 yuan per head, including more expensive seafood products such as lobster.
