A series of travel and food activities will be held in Beijing in February to boost touristm in the capital city.

The opening ceremony of the program was held by the Beijing Tourism Development Commission at the Beijing Manfulou Restaurant on Jan 27.

"Beijing has abundant food resources and gathers gourmet food from all across the country," said Song Yu, director of the tourism commission.

Food plays an important part in boosting tourist consumption in the city, and food consumption has maintained high-speed growth over the years, according to Song.

"Beijing's food consumption has increased from 52 billion yuan ($8.7 billion) in 2009 to nearly 100 billion yuan in 2014," Song says.

The food promotion program was first held in 2009 to tap into the growing market and build the "Eat in Beijing" brand.

The whole program will take advantage of famous Beijing restaurants and focus on a New Year with original taste and flavor of Beijing.

During the program, 10 food streets will be recommended, 100 diners will offer discounts, and a public lottery drawing will be held.

Those activities aim to fully develop and integrate Beijing's travel and food resources and satisfy food demands of tourists and local residents during the Spring Festival.
