Trade war will not end in US' favor

[2019-06-14 07:38]

Dashing hopes of a quick agreement on trade relations with China, the US administration imposed punitive tariffs on another $200 billion of Chinese goods. Now that the Chinese government has responded with new tariffs on $60 billion of US products, the United States is threatening tariffs targeting yet another $300 billion of Chinese imports. Both sides are now digging in for a long fight - largely because Americans have yet to feel the pain of the White House's policies.

Open dialogue will enhance SCO cooperation

[2019-06-14 07:38]

Since its inception in 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has developed its organizational structure, built a network of formal ties with other states and multilateral institutions, and furthered the agenda in an incremental way so member states can come up with broader economic, political and security objectives.

Doubts over China being a developing nation baseless

[2019-06-14 07:38]

Thanks to its rapid economic growth, China has not only become the world's second-largest economy but also cultivated many high-tech companies, including Alibaba, Huawei and Tencent. But it is wrong to assume, as some Western media reports do, that China is a "developed country" that is trying to challenge the United States' dominant global status.

US economy displaying self-inflicted wounds

[2019-06-13 07:32]

While Larry Kudlow, director of the US National Economic Council, tried to shrug off the worse-than-expected job increase in the United States last month, the lowest since October 2016, claiming that the performance of the US economy is not contingent on the outcome of the trade frictions with China, Washington might want to consider the harm its ill-judged trade war is doing to the US.

US' obsessive compulsion to play lead role

[2019-06-13 07:32]

Editor's note: In the eyes of some US politicians, there can be only one leading actor on the world stage. How the plot develops depends on what it says, because it desires to be in charge of writing the script. Zhong Sheng, a columnist for People's Daily, comments:

Sino-US trade war won't go the Japan way

[2019-06-13 07:32]

The United States has been criticizing China for its "unfair" trade practices and currency "manipulation", allegations that are strikingly similar to the ones the US labeled against Japan in the 1980s and 1990s, leading to the US-Japan trade dispute. The US criticized Japan for its large current account surplus, which resulted in long, intense trade negotiations between the two countries, and a broad range of economic policies to reduce what the US considered was Japan's excessive savings.

US actions harming global strategic stability

[2019-06-13 07:32]

Editor's Note: China and Russia issued a joint statement last week vowing to strengthen global strategic stability. What prompted the two countries to issue such a statement? Is Washington's withdrawal from several arms control agreements good for the security of the US and the world? And what role will technology play in a future arms race? Two experts share their views on the issue with China Daily's Pan Yixuan. Excerpts follow:

SCO can help improve global governance

[2019-06-13 07:32]

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is now the world's largest transregional organization in terms of population and land area, as well as economic potential. And despite its disadvantages, the SCO has been making concerted efforts to maintain regional peace and stability. So it will not lose its importance in the future, as some Western media outlets have speculated.
