Virginia exposes face of racism in US

[2017-08-17 08:53]

Editor's note: US President Donald Trump condemned white supremacists by name on Monday, two days after a white supremacist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, turned violent and shocked the country. One woman was killed and more than 20 people were injured in a car attack, with over 30 being injured in clashes between white supremacist groups and counter-protesters. And two police officers trying to quell the unrest died when their helicopter crashed. Two scholars share their views on the incident with China Daily's Cui Shoufeng. Excerpts follow:

China can help WHO improve global health

[2017-08-17 08:53]

A few weeks ago, as the newly elected director-general of the World Health Organization, I undertook one of my first official country visits, to Yemen. That country, after two years of conflict and the complete collapse of basic public services, is now suffering from the largest cholera outbreak in the world, in one of the greatest humanitarian crisis anywhere. Malnutrition is rampant, and famine appears imminent. Some 15 million people have no access to healthcare or to clean water and sanitation.

Refusing cash not an option for mobile payment firms

[2017-08-17 08:53]

China is becoming increasingly digitalized, with people, especially the youth, preferring to use mobile apps to pay for almost anything, from food to air tickets. No doubt, mobile payment platforms, notably WeChat Pay and Alipay, are responsible for making possible this trend. But despite that, recent efforts by Alipay to promote cash-free living in some cities have created controversy after some participating merchants refused to accept cash, or payments made in renminbi in China's case.

US must not link trade with DPRK issue

[2017-08-16 08:56]

One day before US President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum allowing the US Trade Representative to consider launching an investigation into "unfair Chinese trade practices", National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster said China's help was vital to resolving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and the United States was not looking for a trade conflict.

Boycott of Chinese goods will hurt India

[2017-08-16 08:56]

Amid the ongoing standoff between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the Donglang area of the Sikkim sector of the China-India border, several ultranationalist Indian politicians of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and some right-wing Hindu organizations are trying to incite Indian citizens to boycott Chinese goods. The call to boycott Chinese goods is a frog-in-the-well kind of perspective, which will not help India but could deter Chinese enterprises from investing in India and thus harm bilateral cooperation.

Working together for better mutual understanding

[2017-08-16 08:56]

We must never lose sight of our role as society's watchdogs. We must hold our communities, our nations, BRICS, to account. We tell the stories wanting them to succeed, it is only right that we be vigilant in exposing cases where these stories have not succeeded because of individual greed or the corruption of officials.

Sickness in US society will not be easy to cure

[2017-08-15 09:41]

For a long time, people in the United States took pride in the belief that one of the things that made their nation great was a system that was designed to encourage principled disagreements so that people could achieve consensus through reasoned debate.
