Cai Qi elected new Beijing mayor

Acting Beijing mayor Cai Qi has been formally elected to the position during the the fifth session of the city's legislative body, the 14th Beijing Municipal People's Congress.

Cai, born in 1955, was appointed vice mayor and acting mayor of Beijing at the end of October at the 30th session of the Standing Committee of the 14th Beijing Municipal People's Congress.

In the past two and half months, he has spoken out about integrated development between Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei and the construction of Beijing's sub-city center Tongzhou.

He said the city should make more effort to deal with big city diseases, provide a better environment and public services for citizens.

In 2015, Cai was appointed as executive deputy director of the National Security Commission of the Communist Party of China, a ministerial-level position.

In April 2007, he was elected mayor of Hangzhou, Zhejiang's capital. In 2013, he was appointed vice-governor of Zhejiang province.

During the fifth session, Zhang Shuofu was also elected as the head of Beijing's new supervision committee, responsible for bribery and dereliction of duty cases, which merges the supervision and corruption prevention departments.

Zhang, born in 1965, is the head of the Beijing Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection.

In late December 2016, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, approved a pilot program to produce an integrated supervision system that will be more authoritative and efficient.

It was decided that the new supervision committees would be tested in Beijing, Shanxi and Zhejiang provinces.

Li Wei was elected to the position of director of the Standing Committee of Beijing Municipal People's Congress.
