NANJING -- A garment workshop foreman has been detained for hiring child laborers in eastern China's Jiangsu Province, according to local authorities Tuesday.

The foreman, Feng, 40, was running the workshop without licenses in Changshu city, according to a statement by the city's publicity department.

The workshop appeared in a video showing child laborers working overtime in Changshu, which was released Monday by Pearvideo, an online video platform. It quickly went viral.

The local government carried out an inspection of 1,797 workshops and 163 shops and enterprises, finding eight suspected child laborers.

The children are taking classes at a vocational school on Tuesday until the case is settled, when they will be paid wages owed and sent home.

Changshu has one of the largest garment industries in China.

Since 2012 there have been a total of 107 child labor cases found in Changshu, involving 211 children.
