Wanshan national park offers insights into mercury mining

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2016-11-22 17:29

The Wanshan National Mine Park is 105 square kilometers of land that includes the former mercury mines in Wanshan District, Tongren, Southwest China's Guizhou Province.

Mercury mining activity in the area dates back to China's Qin and Han Dynasties 2, 000 years ago. Despite the exhaustion of mine resources in recent years, Wanshan managed to develop another special industry related to mercury mining - tourism centered on mining culture.

The old mercury mines were transformed into a national mine park that gives visitors an interesting array of exhibits about the history of mercury mining and the lifestyles of mining communities in the region.
