URUMQI - Heavy flooding triggered by rainstorms has killed two people and affected over 16,400 others in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, local authorities said Thursday.

Downpours started in Kashgar Prefecture on Sunday evening, destroying residential properties and some infrastructure in the region, according to the prefecture's flood control and drought relief headquarters.

As of Wednesday, rain-triggered flooding had killed over 1,310 head of livestock and damaged 699 homes as well as over 2,100 hectares of farmland in Kashgar.

The flooding also destroyed local roads, bridges and underground power lines in the region.

The local government has relocated 1,925 local residents away from possible secondary risks and sent relief goods to the disaster-hit region.
