China on July 12 urged denuclearization and mutual trust in the Korean Peninsula, the only region in the world with Cold War vestiges.

The serious lack of trust between relevant parties is the fundamental reason why the overall security situation on the Peninsula remains fragile, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Regional Forum Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 12.

The Peninsula's denuclearization, and peace and stability in Northeast Asia meets the common interests and is the common responsibility of all parties, he said.

Concerning the complex and sensitive situation on the Korean Peninsula, China maintains the need to iron out differences through dialogue, urging relevant parties to stay calm, exercise restraint and avoid taking moves that may exacerbate tensions, he said.

Yang added that the Six-Party Talks proved to be an effective mechanism for realizing the denuclearization of the Peninsula and to maintain peace and stability on the Peninsula and in Northeast Asia. It is also an important platform for relevant parties to improve relations.

China will continue to work unrelentingly with the international community to achieve peace and stability on the Peninsula, he said.
