Qiu Shuting, a fashion designer who graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, has long collaborated with local artisans in Hangzhou to weave embroidery and jacquard techniques into contemporary collections, which have been shown at Paris and Milan fashion weeks. She said the Eastern flair in her works flows naturally from her cultural roots, not forced cultural symbols.
"Cultural roots reveal themselves naturally, not through forced symbolism," Qiu said. "I take pride in bringing local craftsmanship to the global stage."
Yao Lan, a young Suzhou embroidery inheritor and co-founder of Yao Embroidery, emphasized the value of sustained cultural outreach. Her team has debuted new Suzhou embroidery collections in Paris for three consecutive years and once encountered overseas viewers mistaking the craft for Japanese workmanship.
