Wuhan lab turns agricultural research into commercial crops

Hongshan Laboratory in Wuhan is stepping up efforts to turn agricultural research into commercial products by working with seed companies, growers and feed producers.

Established in 2021 and led by Huazhong Agricultural University, the laboratory is developing new crop varieties and agricultural materials, with a focus on bringing research results into wider use.

Its corn breeding team has developed high-protein varieties aimed at increasing the protein content of animal feed and reducing reliance on soybean meal. More than 200,000 bags of high-protein corn seed were sold this year, according to Professor Qiu Fazhan. One variety, Weiyu 115, has a reported protein content of 13 percent.

The laboratory is working with Weimi Biotechnology to establish dedicated planting, purchasing, drying and storage arrangements, helping ensure the crop reaches feed producers while maintaining its identity.

Other projects include Huamoxiang 3, a black rice variety approved in 2023, and biodegradable mulch made from straw. In June, businesses and researchers agreed to form an industry consortium linking black rice breeding, cultivation, processing and sales.

The laboratory is also testing straw-based mulch in rice production, highlighting its broader push to connect scientific innovation with real-world farming needs.
