Teenage participants of the 19th Chinese Bridge‑Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students have embarked on an immersive cultural field trip across Beijing this week, visiting the Palace Museum and the Temple of Heaven to gain first‑hand understanding of Chinese history and traditional philosophy.

At the Palace Museum, participants received specially‑designed task cards focusing on the core concept of "harmony" embodied in three major halls: the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony and the Hall of Preserving Harmony. Guided by interpreters, the young visitors walked along the central axis, studied ancient architectural details and learned how the idea of Zhonghe (moderation and harmony) shaped imperial design philosophy. For many first‑time visitors to China, textbook knowledge turned into real‑world experience amid red walls and golden glazed tiles.

The group later toured the Temple of Heaven where they explored symbolic designs reflecting the ancient Chinese notion of "round heaven and square earth", participated in interactive quiz contests on historical facts, and experimented with acoustic effects at the Echo Wall. Some contestants even joined an a‑cappella chorus together with international students from Tianjin Normal University, their voices echoing within the historic compound.

Participants said the Chinese language is far more than a communication tool; it opens a window to local history and values. Through on‑site observation and cross‑national peer exchanges, these young learners built friendships while developing a more concrete perception of Chinese civilization.
