A book documenting four centuries of scientific achievement in Shanghai’s Xujiahui debuted on Monday at the 2026 Shanghai Book Fair, revealing a technological dimension of Haipai (Shanghai-style) culture.

The book, titled Science and Technology in Zikawei, was published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press and represents a systematic examination of Xujiahui’s scientific heritage.

Featuring 300,000 words with nearly 100 historical images, the book traces an intellectual lineage from Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) scientist Xu Guangqi through contemporary prominent scientists. Its five sections — institutions, figures, exchanges, historical episodes and documents — span disciplines including astronomy, meteorology and geomagnetism.

“When discussing Haipai culture, the public often focuses on literature, art and commerce while overlooking Xujiahui’s profound scientific roots,” said Ou Qijin, curator of the museum of the history of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. “The publication unlocks the technological foundation of Shanghai’s modern rise.”

“Many scientific and academic advances driving Chinese social progress originated in Shanghai, particularly Xujiahui, where science and technology stand paramount,” Jiang Xiaoyuan, chair professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, wrote in his preface.

Chen Huadong, publisher of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press, expressed hope the book would help readers understand the contours of China’s modern scientific development, and inspire reflection on pathways toward building a stronger nation in science and technology.

Complementing the release, Xujiahui Origin launched its fifth CityHike route, connecting historical sites including Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Xuhui campus, the former site of Xujiahui Observatory, and the Xu Guangqi memorial hall with contemporary technology experiences.

The book joins six previous volumes in the “source of Haipai culture” series, collectively illuminating the trajectory of Haipai culture’s inheritance.
