The sixth edition of the Discover Rangtang parent-child study tour was launched in July, inviting families to explore the cultural traditions and natural landscapes of Rangtang county in Southwest China's Sichuan province.
To promote Aba Tibetan and Qiang autonomous prefecture of the province as a destination for study tours and international eco-cultural tourism, the program has grown into one of Rangtang's signature cultural tourism brands. Since its launch in 2019, the initiative has used tourism as a platform, intangible cultural heritage as its foundation and youth education as its goal, creating a distinctive highland learning experience for families.
Over the past five editions, the program has welcomed nearly 100 parent-child groups from China and abroad, steadily building a recognition among travelers seeking meaningful cultural experiences.
This year's program focuses on hands-on learning through local intangible cultural heritage and folk traditions. Participants tried their hand at traditional crafts including thangka painting, Tibetan incense making, Tibetan pottery, butter sculpture, piled embroidery and Tibetan papermaking. Working alongside local artisans gave children a deeper appreciation of the craftsmanship, stories and cultural values behind each tradition.
The tour also took participants to Haizishan Pasture, where they experienced the lifestyle of local herders. Activities such as horseback riding and making dairy products allowed young visitors to experience highland life and connect with the region's natural environment.
The program attracted families from Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen of Guangdong province and Anhui province, as well as the United Kingdom, creating a platform for cross-regional cultural exchange. Through field visits, practical activities and immersive experiences, participants explored how traditional culture can be preserved and revitalized in contemporary life.
Rangtang is known for its pristine landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The county combines spectacular alpine scenery with centuries-old traditions, making it a unique destination for cultural and ecological tourism.
The Discover Rangtang study tour will continue to develop new products centered on local culture and intangible heritage, while improving facilities, services and tourism experiences, according to the organizers. By combining heritage preservation with family education, the program is offering young visitors a way to understand traditional culture through experience.
