Military personnel join flood rescue after reservoirs overflow in Guangxi
Military personnel from the Nanning detachment of the Guangxi Corps of the Chinese People's Armed Police Force have helped evacuate 712 residents as of Tuesday night after sustained heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding in Hengzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.
The Liulan and Yunbiao reservoirs have reported overtopping and breaches since Monday, threatening communities downstream. In response, they sent rescue teams to the affected areas.
In Xiaoyi and Yunbiao townships, among the worst-hit areas, officers used assault boats to search door-to-door through muddy floodwaters. Elderly residents and children who had difficulty moving were carried or lifted onto boats before being transferred to safer areas.
Supplies were also delivered around the clock.
By Tuesday night, rescue teams had helped evacuate 712 trapped residents and transported 28,800 items of emergency supplies, including 12,000 cases of bottled water, 16,000 fast-food meals, and 800 items of disinfectant.
At temporary shelters, folding beds, quilts, and other basic facilities were gradually put in place. Hot meals were also provided to ensure affected residents had food, clothing, and temporary accommodation.
Flood rescue and post-disaster recovery work in Hengzhou is ongoing as local teams continue efforts to protect residents and restore order in affected communities.
