Health body warns against using narcotic and psychotropic drugs illegally

The National Health Commission reiterated on Wednesday the importance of tightening control of addictive narcotic and psychotropic drugs ahead of this year's International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, also known as World Drug Day, on June 26.

Under China's Anti-Drug Law, narcotic drugs are legally defined to include not only opium, heroin, methamphetamine, morphine, marijuana and cocaine, but also other narcotic and psychotropic substances that are addictive and subject to state regulation.

Hu Qiangqiang, spokesman for the commission, said during a news conference that narcotic and psychotropic medications are effective for pain relief and disease management when used appropriately. However, drug misuse can result in addiction, severe adverse reactions, and even fatal consequences.

He said that all such medications must be purchased and used strictly in accordance with prescriptions issued by licensed physicians. Patients are required to attend follow-up visits as scheduled and are strictly prohibited from adjusting dosages or obtaining the drugs independently.

Expired or unused supplies should be returned to medical institutions and must not be sold or transferred to others.

Any act of fraudulent procurement, unauthorized prescribing, or illegal resale of controlled substances may be pursued as a drug-related criminal offense, and perpetrators are subject to legal liability.

Hu added that some potentially addictive drugs are not included on the national controlled substances list, such as dextromethorphan-guaifenesin compound tablets and pregabalin.

Improper use of these medications can lead to damage to the nervous and respiratory systems and even a life-threatening condition. He urged the public to exercise vigilance and caution when purchasing or using such products.
