Kunming hit-and-run driver arrested after fatal crash
A man has been arrested after a car ploughed into multiple pedestrians and vehicles in Kunming, Yunnan province, killing two people and injuring nine others, according to a statement from local authorities on Monday.
The incident occurred at 1:16 pm on Sunday in the city's Xishan district, according to the statement released by the Traffic Management Detachment of the Kunming Public Security Bureau.
Public security authorities quickly arrived at the scene and coordinated with emergency medical services for rescue operations after receiving the report.
Police said that the 49-year-old male driver, surnamed Li, was driving a blue compact SUV on Jinbi Road when he collided with an electric bicycle and several pedestrians.
He then fled the scene, colliding with other vehicles and pedestrians before being apprehended by police.
The accident resulted in two deaths and another nine injuries. The injured were sent to the hospital for treatment and are not in a life-threatening condition.
Further investigation is underway, the statement said.
