BEIJING -- China is considering improving the information release system of infectious diseases through a draft law revision to enhance the capability of prevention and control of such diseases.

The draft revision to the Law on the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases was submitted to an ongoing session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, scheduled from April 27 to 30, for a third reading.

The draft included provisions aimed at strengthening the disease prevention and control capabilities in medical institutions. It emphasized the need for continued improvements in the monitoring, testing, diagnosis, treatment and research capabilities of specialized infectious disease hospitals as well as general hospitals.

It also clarified the responsibilities of various government departments. For example, the department of disease prevention and control under the State Council will be tasked with proposing adjustments to the infectious disease catalog.

The draft also outlined procedures for responding to infectious disease emergencies. The department of disease prevention and control under the State Council will be responsible for drafting national emergency response plans for major infectious diseases and diseases of unknown causes.
