Xinjiang's Turpan Basin buzzes as grape harvest peaks in July heat

July has brought the grape harvest to Turpan in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, where more than 42,000 hectares of vineyards are ripening across the basin oasis. Fields bustle with picking and packing as growers work through the heat, which can reach 40 C.
Located in the Turpan Basin, the area has long been known for its grapes, as its high temperatures, long daylight hours and wide day-night temperature swings make it ideal for viticulture — a tradition that has lasted over 2,000 years. According to the local government, more than 500 grape varieties are now grown in Turpan.
