New river ecology campaign launched in Shanghai
Shanghai Ocean University launched a campaign to protect aquatic life and the Yangtze River ecosystem at Crowne Plaza Shanghai Noah Square on May 10.
According to the university, it will partner the Yangtze River Ecosystem Protection Strategic Research Center, Alibaba Local Life and Alibaba Philanthropy to build a long-term mechanism that would protect aquatic life and maintain ecological balance in the Yangtze River.
Shanghai is the first stop of the campaign, which would eventually be expanded to the provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Henan, Qinghai, Shanxi and Gansu.
One of the campaign objectives is forming a joint task force that would ban fishing and promote aquatic life protection in the Yangtze River, as well as raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity protection.
The campaign will also focus on helping fishermen affected by the ban to find new avenues of income.
