An internet celebrity, Zhang Xinyuan, who rose to fame on Douban (a popular user-based cultural and social website in China), had the very eyebrows that even have become her signature style along with her super red lip.

Though criticized, Zhang still has followers who tried to copy her style.

It is too early to say whether the ultra-thin eyebrows will become the new fashion style.

However, there is nothing new in this trend.

Such a style was popular during the Tang Dynasty (618- 907 AD), and also in many drama series produced in the 1980s in Chinese mainland.

The highly praised TV adaptation of Chinese classical literature The Dream of the Red Chamber is an example as many actresses had ultra-thin eyebrows. Some was so skinny that they looked like two lightly painted lines.

In the recent hit costume drama Story of Yanxi Palace, those eyebrows look more natural, almost in the same style as most Chinese women have today.
