This is Chinese President Xi Jinping's second Latin America tour since taking office last March. During the trip, Xi will attend the sixth BRICS summit in Brazil.

Xi's second overseas trip since taking office showed that China's new leadership considered building friendly ties with the regions a priority for diplomacy.

Xi's visit to Latin America as vice-president further promoted economic and financial cooperation between China and the region. During his visit to Cuba, Xi met revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

Official visits to Mexico, Jamaica, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil and Malta

Then vice-president Xi was invited by then Brazilian vice-president Jose Alencar and the governments of the other five countries. The trip promoted China's friendship and cooperation with the region.
