Then Brazilian President Figueiredo visited China in May 1984 and met with then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in Beijing, where the two exchanged ideas on "peace and development" and Deng pointed out the world's two prominent problems: peace and north-south problems. The talk between the two received positive responses around the world. Deng put forward the diplomatic thinking of "peace and development being theme of the times" in 1985, which later became China's diplomatic guidelines.
