SEOUL - The Republic of Korea and the United States are discussing a possible Washington visit by President Park Geun-hye, local media reported Thursday.

The visit, if confirmed, will mark the first overseas trip by Park, the country's first female president who took office last month.

The potential visit will be aimed at discussing security issues on the Korean peninsula, an unnamed presidential official told local media without elaborating.

The allies have led UN efforts to punish the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) over its recent nuclear test, prompting the communist state to threaten attacks on the two countries.

ROK's military on Wednesday warned of "resolute retaliations" against DPRK provocations.

Park, who replaced hard-liner Lee Myung-bak, campaigned on mending ties with the northern neighbor.
