Cassano apologizes

(China Daily) Updated: 2012-06-14 08:06

Italy striker Antonio Cassano apologized on Tuesday for using a derogatory word to describe homosexuals and saying that he hoped there were no gay players in the national team.

During a press conference, the forward was asked a question about an Italian television personality's claim there are two gay and two so-called "metrosexuals" in the national squad.

"What's a metrosexual?" Cassano asked the questioner, before adding: "If they're queer, that's their problem. I hope there aren't any queers in the national team.

"But if they're queer, it's their business. Are there any? I don't know."

Outspoken Cassano used the Italian word frocio, which can be translated in English as "queer".

His statements were largely laughed off by those who heard them but provoked outrage among gay rights groups, leading to the player's clarification and apology. "I'm sincerely sorry that what I said has sparked controversy and protests from gay associations," said Cassano. "Homophobia is not a sentiment I feel. I didn't want to offend anyone and I certainly didn't want to call into question anyone's freedom of sexuality."
