JOHANNESBURG - World 800 metres men's champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi has dropped out of the South African team to compete at the athletics world championships in Daegu, South Korea, starting this month because of injury, Athletics South Africa (ASA) said on Wednesday.

Mulaudzi, 30, has been suffering from a hamstring complaint which is now affecting his lower back and the injury has not responded to treatment.

"I need to take this injury seriously so I can be ready for the Olympics next year," he said in a statement.
