家族式腐败 (jiazushi fubai): Family corruption

(China Daily) Updated: 2015-04-21 08:15

The investigations of several corrupt high-ranking officials, or "tigers" as they are known, including Zhou Yongkang, the country's former security chief, and Su Rong, a former vice-chairman of the top political advisory body, have all revealed family corruption. Their families became a means of trading power for money, and their family members formed communities of illegal interests. Nepotism and collaborative corruption within families will only result in families ending up in prison together.

Some corrupt officials have spread degenerate values within their families and even made corruption a family tradition. The former director of the National Energy Administration Liu Tienan, for example, taught his son "to take shortcuts", which eventually led his son down the path of corruption. Corrupt family education that goes against the law and the Party's rules will end up harming the entire family.

To avoid family corruption, officials and Party leaders should establish proper values in their families. And the head of a family should not only encourage, advise and remind the family members of these values, they should also set a good example themselves.
