Using sunglasses to view solar eclipse could cause 'irreversible' damage

English.news.cn | Updated: 2015-03-20 09:33

Scientists across Europe have warned people against using sunglasses to view Friday's solar eclipse, it was reported Wednesday.

It also "absolutely" not recommended to view the eclipse through dark glass and video cameras.

The Luxembourg Ministry of Health said these objects are not only unsuitable for observing the sun, but "dangerous" and could cause "irreversible" damage to the retina.

To watch the natural phenomenon, viewers must equip themselves with glasses especially dedicated to the observation of solar eclipses.

In addition, such special eclipse glasses must be intact, and must not be damaged by holes or scratches.

A total solar eclipse will take place on March 20, 2015.

During a solar eclipse, the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, obscuring the sun.
