Scientist wins UNESCO award
Chen Hualan, a professor at Harbin Veterinary Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, is among five scientists named as winners of the 2016 L'Oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science International Awards. Chen was nominated for her outstanding research into the biology of the bird flu virus, leading to the development and use of an effective vaccine, the award committee announced. The winners will be awarded on March 24 in Paris. Each scientist will receive an award of 100,000 euros ($113,000) for their contribution to science.

Boy, 4, killed by escalator handrail
A 4-year-old boy died after being trapped under the hand-rail of the escalator at an intercity train station, China News Service reported on Thursday. The incident occurred at about 11 am when the boy was playing near the escalator and got stuck between the escalator's handrail and the floor. His mother was reportedly using a toilet at the time.

Fishing boat crew discovered dead
Five fishermen were found dead early on Thursday morning in a vessel in waters off Zhoushan, local authorities said. Police have not ruled out foul play, and said one crew member and the life raft were missing. The five victims, aged 31 to 53, were identified as residents of Putuo district in Zhoushan, according to the local government.
