Newspaper apologizes for photo

China Daily | Updated: 2013-09-24 07:17

Daily Nation, one of the biggest newspapers in Kenya, apologized on Monday for publishing a graphic photograph of a Chinese victim of an attack in a Nairobi shopping mall that took place on Saturday.

The newspaper issued the apology after protests from the Chinese embassy in Nairobi and from overseas Chinese organizations.

"On the front page of the Sunday Nation yesterday, we published a photograph of an injured victim of the Westgate terrorist attack. The picture was graphic and should not have been used," Nation Media Group said in a statement. "We apologize to the family of the victim and to our readers.

"We wish quick recovery for those who were injured, and offer our condolences to those who have lost their dear ones. We share the pain of those whose loved ones are still trapped in the mall, or are missing," the newspaper said.

"NMG condemns this outrageous attack on innocent Kenyans and visitors. We shall not allow our spirit to be broken" by these violent acts."
