Ensuring child safety

Editor's note: The following is the latest in a series of weekly auto safety tips provided by premium carmaker Mercedes-Benz:

Weather can be unpredictable. You and your children need to be particularly careful on the roads when it affects visibility or road conditions.

What to be aware of when driving in bad weather?

Adverse weather conditions can affect a driver's behavior and responsiveness and increase the risk of traffic accidents. Therefore it is important for pedestrians, especially small children to be seen clearly in dark conditions and bad weather. Mercedes-Benz's children's road safety initiative education program - MobileKids suggest that children need to wear clothes with bright colors, or wear reflective and glowing accessories in order to stand out from surroundings.

Every year in China there are over 6 million vehicle accidents, and about 25 percent of these are weather-related. This type of accidents mainly occur in adverse weather conditions such as rain, sleet, snow, and fog, which lower visibility and reduce tyre grip on wet, snowy or icy roadways.

To help in these slippery driving conditions, Mercedes-Benz four-wheel drive ensures plenty of grip even in the harshest of weather.

The 4-MATIC system, standard on Mercedes-Benz SUV models, uses cutting-edge technology to give driving power to all four wheels. This results in better grip on ice, snow, and wet roads, providing improved stability and therefore greater safety in critical situations.

Drivers who spend a lot of time behind the wheel on motorways can also benefit from the ability of four-wheel drive technology to reduce the sensitivity of the car to side winds. 4-wheel drive also gives greater traction power when pulling a trailer, and of course better handling and flexibility off-road across rough terrain.

Bad weather can strike suddenly, so the best advice when severe weather hits is to stay off the road. If you must drive, make sure you are prepared for the conditions.
