Editor's note: The 2011 Summer Davos forum will be held from September 14 to 16 in Dalian with the theme of "Mastering Quality Growth". Some top executives share their views on what the talking points will be:
With global economic power shifting from West to East, many multinational companies are gearing up to meet increased demand from strategic emerging industries in such expanding markets as China.
Bombardier China, a branch of Canada's Bombardier, a manufacturer of rail equipment and aircraft, is one of the most successful foreign companies in the rail business in China, it did not get there overnight, according to its chief executive.
For large corporations and particularly multinationals, quality growth is about aligning stakeholder interests.
Governments around the world face significant challenges in reviving and then sustaining growth in an increasingly complex global economy.
German premium carmaker Audi AG is well on track to achieve its target to move 300,000 vehicles this year in China after posting record monthly sales in August.
Ren Guangli is a loyal fan of the Changjiang 750 (CJ-750) sidecar motorbikes. He bought his first one in 1980, long before the country was inspired by war heroes in early Chinese, German and Soviet movies that showed the protagonists in furious car chases in the sidecars. The sidecars were also convenient because gasoline was cheaper then, Ren says. A usual scene in the late 1980s: men in their 30s driving proudly on the roads, their wives riding pillion and their kids in the sidecar. At the time, the police also used the CJ-750.
I first met Andre Fu nine years ago when he was still based in London. He was already hailed as a talent to watch by Wallpaper after bursting upon the Asian design scene with Zen in Shanghai's Xintiandi. At the time, he was a fresh young face who had formed a company with Stephane Orsolini after they met while working for John Pawson in London. He related a story about how his inspiration for a series of backlit bronze glass screens came from his grandmother being fitted for dresses in front of a wrap-around mirror. Many years later, in his first hotel and Swire Properties' flagship property The Upper House, echoes of those screens can be seen behind the reception at its signature restaurant, Cafe Gray Deluxe.
She's half-Vietnamese and half-Polish, and the exotic mix manifests itself in a tall, slim and stylish body with smooth long locks and a mega-watt smile. When Michelle Siwy, 34, showed up at her fashion show in Beijing, many thought she was one of the models.
Miao Meirong, 33, unveiled her maiden collection on the runway at the Asia Fashion Exchange at Tent@Orchard in Singapore in May. Drawing inspiration from an urban lifestyle, Miao's collection uses natural fibers such as wool, cotton and silk to create simple and clean but structured outfits.
The Milan fashion week ended Tuesday with Giorgio Armani and the DSquared2 designing duo offering their spin on next year's spring and summer styles.
When I first heard about Kung Fu Panda in New York, I was thinking it was just another cheap ploy out to make money off Chinese culture, but I was wrong. Fast forward three years and having seen Kung Fu Panda multiple times, I find myself wanting to watch its sequel Kung Fu Panda 2 again even though I've already seen it twice.
