A major safety inspection involving multiple agencies started on Monday in Beijing and will continue for 40 days across the capital, the Beijing Work Safety Commission said in a notice issued on Monday.

The inspection, covering fire safety and other risks, was ordered after an accidental house fire in Daxing district on Saturday killed 19 people and injured eight.

Inspection targets include large warehouses, hutong neighborhoods, factories, wholesale markets and motorcycle parts centers near the city's airport, downtown and areas between city center and the suburbs.

Old buildings, large residential areas, construction sites with flammable and explosive materials and public places where many people gather, such as supermarkets, will also be under strict supervision. Safety inspections will be conducted at tourism sites, hotels, restaurants and schools.

"We will be tough on industries with high potential safety risks and try our best to reduce the amount of accidents and make sure the capital is secure," the notice said.

Multiple departments will be involved, including the Beijing Fire Bureau, Traffic Management Bureau, Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Administration of Cultural Heritage.
