Decode China: A bright future for the golden fruit

By Sun Xiaochen | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2016-12-19 16:15

After a generation of building its name recognition across the country as the birthplace of the golden fruit, Huichang, a small county in the rugged region of Jiangxi province, used to be known for Chairman Mao's poem praising its scenic landscape. However in recent years, poverty became a serious issue in Huichang due to an underdeveloped local economy and labor flowing to urban areas.

Encouraged by governments, farmers started to plant fruits that fit with the local soil and climate, such as the orange and tangelo, and have developed a booming business in fruit processing, sales and agricultural service, to cast off poverty and build a better life.

Their quest for happiness will inspire generations to come.
